I'll bet you didn't know that today is national Weed Appreciation Day! Another celebration of something that personally, I don't have a need or desire to celebrate. I have a big yard to take care of and weeds just make it more difficult and ultimately distract from the beauty of a lawn that I work very hard to groom each year.
If you're a Madison resident, and you've been here any length of time, you know what I'm talking about. In about two to three weeks the entire city will be engulfed in dandelions, which might look pretty for a short period of time, but are mostly a nuisance that the city lost control of a long time ago. And though they may have the potential to provide a good meal or a nice cup of tea when desired, in 17 years here in Madison, WI I still haven't seen anyone stop to eat one.
I've shared a few photos of these pests on facebook and would love for you to share a few of your own while you're there. Maybe we can get a group of them together and get the city to take some real action on keeping them from engulfing some poor under 12 soccer player this spring 🙂
To be fair, some weeds are actually beneficial to our planet's ecosystem and I'm sure there are plenty of folks who might take issue with my beautiful lawn. So, in fairness to the weeds, I've included a link below where you can read and learn all about why weeds are so...cool?
